The project was developed for the Trackunit company A/S, which is based in Denmark. The company offers vehicle-tracking services. They are in high demand among middle-sized and big companies from various industries: building construction, city transportation, taxi services, cargo delivery, etc.
By the time of project realization, Trackunit A/S has had a well-organized serial production of their equipment, which was installed on vehicles to make their tracking possible.
However, as Android/iOS gadgets began gaining popularity, the company decided to extend their product portfolio by including mobile application development, which could be used as part of their tracking devices. This would allow reducing some service costs and help the company reinforce its market presence.
Beyond any doubt, a lot of Trackunit A/S clients have iOS and Android gadgets, which liberates them from having to buy specialized extra hardware and also makes the whole experience easier for them: they can stick just to the app they need and pay only for the select necessary services.
The offered solution consists of the following applications: a) application, which records coordinates of a vehicle to send them to the server b) application, which receives those coordinates and shows them on a map.
The first app has a concise interface, which is needed mostly for the user identification and application configuring. It scans the GPS coordinates of a given device at specific time intervals (they are customizable) and sends the data to the server: coordinates of a vehicle, its movement speed, direction, etc.
The app that receives coordinates from the server has a more user-friendly interface. It shows a car’s location on a map and allows setting specific warning signals, which are triggered if, for example, a vehicle has left a certain area.
Besides, the app provides statistics regarding the usage of a vehicle in question. It includes the average speed, distance covered, the temperature on board, etc. Basically, this app is a set of diverse applications: there are IOS and Android versions, as well as a few differently designed iterations, versions released by the Trackunit A/S subsidiaries, and those created for the client companies.
The user interface of the apps was developed by Trackunit.
The most intellectual product featured in this line is an asphalt paver automatic workstation dubbed Paver Operator Unit. For instance, if the operator works too fast they may run out of asphalt before a truck arrives with a fresh portion of asphalt. This can result in surface joints, which must be avoided. If the operator is rather too careful, to avoid the said issues, it decreases the work efficiency. This suggests that the worker must be aware when the truck arrives with a new batch of asphalt.
Paver Operator is an Android application, which helps the asphalt paver operators check arrival of the asphalt trucks, adding to it time prediction based on the average speed of a truck, its direction and the route current position.
It supports automatic route calculation with the possibility of subsequent adjustment.
After completing the project, we helped reduce the development costs and mitigate potential risks related to the development stage. This service expansion has also helped to increase efficiency and expand the company’s market presence.
Plus, this software solution doesn’t only assist the asphalt paver operators, but also helps predict the arrival time of the city and suburban transport, control taxi cab and freight services, as well as monitor coastal watercraft.
